Curled up in a ball, shivering and scared in a makeshift cage he shared with three litter mates at the Department of Sanitation in Secaucus, NJ, I reached in to grab him and he let out a hiss that belied his size, which was all of 250 grams. I pulled back in fear. My brother, Greg, who was with me, reached in and grabbed him. The kitten immediately took hold of Greg’s shirt and climbed to his neck where he laid purring – a purr as loud as anything I had ever heard. And just like that, he changed my life forever. Little did I know then, July 1989, how he would profoundly impact my life.

Prior to starting a cat sitting business, I worked in financial publishing on Wall Street for nearly 20 years. That is, until I lost my job shortly before the beginning of the financial collapse, in 2006. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, but I clearly knew what I didn’t want to do. Despite my experience and education, an MBA and MS in Publishing, I was no longer interested in corporate America and all that entailed.

Confused and at a loss as to what to do next, I turned on the TV and listened as one talk show expert after another told me to “find my bliss,” and just do what I love. Easier said than done. Like most people I know, I had no idea what I wanted to do.

People would ask me all the time, “What do you love?” The answer was always the same: “I love my cat.” Then one day, it hit me! How can I leverage my experience, skills, education and my love of cats? And, just like that, I went from Director of Advertising and Sponsorship Sales to Catpreneur! And, I’ve never been happier.
